Dangerously Titillating

FASHION influences can be found everywhere... in the whimsical beauty of a child's laughter, the subtlety and shape of a rose, or even a crime scene...

If you haven't by now, meet Melanie Pullen. LA based Pullen, is known for her "High Fashion Crime Scenes" photography. Part morbid, part fabulous, these photos are inspired by actual vintage crime scene photos.

"Pullen herself has noted that she takes aim at society's glamorization of violent acts and crimes by literally redressing what are deeply disturbing events. To create High Fashion Crime Scenes Pullen at times enlisted the help of up to sixty people per shoot: set builders, makeup artists, models, stylists, and stunt crew among others. Her models have included actresses Rachel Miner and Juliet Lewis. Many important fashion houses have lent or donated clothes and jewelry for shoots, among them Prada, Bvgari, Gucci and Chanel".

ah yes... i love pullen's work. it's beautiful and macabre, and they really wouln't work without fashion. i keep thinking about your post about how fashion affects everyone who wakes up in the morning, some how i see these two posts as being related. i don't know how to articulate this but for some reason being fabulously dressed has a necessary function for the living, but is entirely futile for the dead.

at the nan kempner:american chic opening, harold koda was talking about how emotional it was for nan's famliy to edit out her wardrobe... because, he said "clothing is a facsimile of the person".

interesting stuff.

Member when ANTM did a shoot like this a couple cycles ago? They got such a backlash from viewers, and here is someone who has a made a career out of it.
I (personally)think it's too much. It's just pictures, I know, 'fashion is fun' and what not, but women are already portrayed in vulnerable, and weak positions by the media. This takes it further making violence against women acceptable.

I too love Pullen's work. I saw a segment of her work on some tv show a while back and was completely drawn in. It's such a weird combination but it works.

Beautiful but disturbing. I am not so sure I agree with the idea of re-dressing old crime scene photos...seems to exploit the victims of those crimes a little.

creepy but so intriguing.

It reminds me of that one America's Next Top Model shoot where they were strangled, drowned, etc.

but this one is obviously soo much better.

these photo's have got you guys talking! i suppose that is what art is meant to do. I don't believe pullen meant it as a blatent explotation of women, rather than showing how society glorifies violence... but in a shocking way. the hanging photo is called Prada, and the second is Half Prada. check out the rest of her work, including the barrell series.
