Recycled Frocks

ONE fashionista's garbage, is another fashionista's treasure. I came across an interesting article about a young hipster by the name of Apple who has managed to build her a lot wardrobe on clothing she has literally found on the street.

Apple 31, has been dumpster diving for duds since her college days in Brooklyn, NY Pittsburg, and now, post law school in Chicago. Apple describes the streets of New York as a "mecca of discarded clothing"... she even documents her fashion finds on her blog, Found Clothing.
As you darlings may have guessed, Apple has found some great pieces on the streets of New York such as a BCBC Max Azaria dress, but hasn't had the same luck on the streets of Chicago.

Have you ever found a piece of clothing on the street that you've actually worn? And if you haven't would you ever actually wear something found on the street?

Hi there,

Thanks for the coverage! Just want to clarify and correct a few things:

I'd say about 40% of my wardrobe (excluding socks and undergarments) is found stuff. Definitely not all of it.

I went to college in Pittsburgh, PA.

It's a subjective thing, but I don't think of myself as a hipster ... more like a proudly working-class, trend-avoiding woman with a fairly decent music collection. And glasses.

I've actually found several designer goods on the streets of Chicago, including Calvin Klein jeans and a Ralph Lauren sweater. And tons of other stuff, some of which I've posted. More pics of new finds will be posted in a few days ...

Anybody who answers the questions about finding clothes should contact me as well ... I post other people's stories and pics on my Website.

Thanks again! -- FoundClothing Lauri

never on the street...in fact the last "fashion" related thing I stumbled upon on the street was a long ripped out hair extension...

I do dumpster often, but instead of random people's trash, I do borderline theft and turn to the Salvation Army dumpster. I've found some amazing things, the craziest of which would have to be an almost full bottle of Astroglide. Not a keeper.

wow.
I admire her.
Personally, I wouldn't even touch something on the street floor let alone wear it.

now that's what you call being green.

i remember way back when, i was 18, living in brooklyn, and working a part-time job making $5/hr... seeing hefty-hefty cinch sacks full of clothes on the streets of the west village, let's just say i'm not above it.

heck, i just found a free dress in my work bathroom two weeks ago.

i mean, isn't that why we have dry cleaning?

No offense but I think I wouldn't wear something that i found on the street.

Hmmm... I don't know about on the street on the street. But I did find clothes in a bag at my apartment complex next 2 the dumpster. Turns out I was able to grab onto some good finds. I found some dog pajamas, a coat/jacket with a detachable fur-like hood (not sure if its real or not), and Dolce and Gabanna jeans.

Found a red piece of fabric in Billy's Burg in New York last year. Turned it into a belt, a scarf, and gift wrap!

Well, I'd have no problem with wearing it, I think it just adds to the charm, but really, how likely is it to just stumble across a BCBC Max Azara dress or a Ralh Lauren piece in the middle of the street.

Fair enough if she's lucky enough to!

I found an original Texan B&W embroidered cowboy shirt from the 50's & an 80's red nylon skin tight, polo-necked bat winged mini dress by the trash cans in the garbage room of my London apartment. I kept both for ages, but eventually I ebayed the shirt (£50!), and althought I always kept the dress in my prop kit, intending to use it on a shoot one day, when I moved over to NYC I gave away all my pieces at the twice yearly clothes swap my girfriends & I hold. And now LC , my mad actress friend tears it up in that dress at parties looking like the goddess she is. A much better use than me putting it on some dodgy celeb!

What an amusing story! Not sure if I could do that though.

Not for me, but I could see it working out in the ritzier parts of town where people throw away thousands of dollars' worth of clothes instead of donating them to a thrift shop. A friend of mine found a Versace dress that way, that had been thrown out by someone, I guess because it was "too last season" or something. It was too small for any of us, so she had it dry cleaned and sold it to a resale boutique.

does that mean she goes dumpster diving, or she literally picks them off the street?

intriguing but not for me. Not clothes anyway. I have friends who have stumbled across great sound systems and beautiful sofas while driving around the suburbs. That sort of counts as dumpster diving... just not intentionally I suppose

I couldn't do that, but it is interesting, imagine finding a fabulous vintage bag!

Er, I've never found anything on the streets of NY to wear. I have a few friends that have found like AA tee's and they wear them. But also their guys and I think it's different?

Props to her for being able to find stuff that fits her.

when I first read about that blog I thought well. sounds kind of disgusting!? Actually now I really see things on streets, but would not dare to grab it...

But I guess there is nice stuff to be found on streets. But... hhm, still kind of disgusting!

I once found an original Hermes silk scarf though!!!!

I wish i found great clothes on the street. Then again, i don't think i would touch anything found on a nyc street or in a dumpster.

Great blog by the way, would you like to trade links?

Well if it´s still nice, why not?
